A seminar titled “Being a University Student in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” was organized by our Faculty’s Department of Management Information Systems in collaboration with the Informatics Community. The event, held at the Prof. Dr. Sabri Bektöre Conference Hall, featured Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Özdinç, Head of the Management Information Systems Department, as the keynote speaker. The session was attended by Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demirtaş, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, academic staff, and students.
During his talk, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özdinç outlined the historical development of artificial intelligence, noting that the field traces its roots back to the 1950s with Alan Turing’s pioneering question, “Can machines think?” He emphasized the transformative impact of AI, particularly following the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, and highlighted that AI has now become an integral part of many domains—from agriculture and healthcare to cybersecurity, finance, banking, and image processing.
Stressing the growing importance of AI literacy, Özdinç explained that the ability to critically evaluate AI outputs, make informed decisions, and distinguish between real and synthetic information is now essential. He also underlined that data privacy is among the most critical challenges in the AI era and that ethical principles, academic integrity, and information security must be handled with care during data processing and model development.
Addressing future career trends, Özdinç stated that the rapid transformation brought by AI affects all disciplines and that having basic coding knowledge has become an important advantage across fields. He highlighted the central role of data science in shaping future professions and encouraged students to integrate data-driven skills into their academic and professional development.
He noted that emerging fields such as prompt engineering, AI ethics consulting, and AI-related psychological support are becoming increasingly relevant, adding that critical thinking and prompt-writing skills are evolving into the new “universal language” of the future.
The event concluded with a Q&A session with participating students.
