Burcu Akkan, a 2013 graduate of our Faculty’s Economics Department, met with our students to share her life experiences as a mother of a special-needs child, her entrepreneurial journey, and her work in the media sector with sincerity and openness.
Akkan explained that she began her professional career through remote working opportunities and that her experience in media consultancy helped her gain confidence. These experiences later motivated her to establish BRC Media and Promotion Organization, where she produced photography, promotional films, and social media content for clients ranging from healthcare institutions to corporate brands. She also founded BRC Party Supplies and Organization, expanding into event design and organization management.
Sharing her reflections on the pandemic period, Akkan emphasized that rather than focusing on the challenges faced by the event sector, she chose to focus on emerging opportunities—an approach that renewed her entrepreneurial motivation.
Akkan stated that she had to temporarily transfer her business responsibilities due to her daughter’s medical treatment, describing this phase as one of the most difficult experiences of her life. Afterward, she reoriented her career and founded FMS Media and Communication. She also noted that she is currently in the process of writing a book about her experiences as a mother of a special-needs child in hopes of guiding families facing similar challenges.
Highlighting the value of knowledge gained during university education and the importance of benefiting from the experience of faculty members, Akkan emphasized that such foundations are crucial for entrepreneurship. She concluded by noting that growing a business and expanding a professional network require following experts in the field and seeking support from them when necessary.
The event ended with a question-and-answer session followed by the presentation of a certificate of appreciation by Dean Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demirtaş.
