The “Combating the Informal Economy” event, organized by the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Finance Club, was held at the Sabri Bektöre Conference Hall. The event was attended by academics, students, and officials from the Afyonkarahisar Directorate of Finance.

Evaluations on Taxation and the Informal Economy
Prof. Dr. İhsan Cemil Demir, Head of the Department of Finance at FEAS and Dean of the Faculty of Law, stated that the informal economy is one of Türkiye’s biggest problems, with an estimated rate of around 30%. He emphasized the need to foster tax awareness at an earlier stage in the education system to improve tax consciousness.

Acting Provincial Treasurer of Afyonkarahisar, İbrahim Gündüz, highlighted the importance of activities organized within the scope of Tax Week, noting that taxation is a fundamental tool for economic growth and social welfare. He stated that Afyonkarahisar’s share in total tax revenues is 0.17% and stressed the necessity of increasing this rate.

Abdülmecit Ulutaş, Director of Kocatepe Tax Office, underlined that taxes are an essential source for financing public services, pointing out that the informal economy leads to a reduction in public revenues and inadequacies in public services.

Cengiz Şirin, Revenue Management and Audit Director, in his presentation titled “Voluntary Tax Compliance and Broadening the Tax Base,” stated that taxpayers could benefit from up to 6.9 million TL in tax deductions through voluntary tax compliance.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session.
