Our faculty organized a “Water-Friendly Faculty, Environmentally Conscious Generation” awareness event where reusable water bottles were distributed to students.
The event, held at the our faculty building, was attended by Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Hale Fulya Kaya, Sustainability Coordinator Prof. Dr. Emine Hesna Kandır, Prof. Dr. Ethem Kadri Pektaş from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Deputy Sustainability Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Özdinç, as well as academic staff and students.
In her opening remarks, Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Hale Fulya Kaya stated that water dispensers had been installed in the faculty in 2024 as part of a sustainability project, emphasizing the faculty’s goal of becoming a “Water-Friendly Faculty.” Referring to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Kaya underlined the importance of ensuring free and equitable access to clean drinking water for all students. She noted that the distribution of reusable water bottles was intended to encourage greater use of the dispensers and to promote environmental awareness across the campus.
Highlighting the broader impact of the initiative, Kaya expressed her belief that the awareness fostered within the faculty could extend to the entire university community.
“Regular Water Consumption Is Essential for a Healthy Life”
Prof. Dr. Ethem Kadri Pektaş emphasized the importance of adequate daily water intake for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He noted that consuming water gradually at regular intervals is more beneficial than drinking large amounts at once, and advised students to avoid foods with high sodium content. Pektaş also drew attention to the long-term health risks associated with poor dietary habits, particularly concerning kidney health, and stressed the importance of preventive health screenings.
Addressing students’ preference for purchasing bottled water, Pektaş highlighted both the economic and environmental drawbacks of single-use plastic bottles. He stated that drinking at least 1.5 liters of water per day using reusable bottles is a more sustainable, healthier, and cost-effective choice.
“A Green Campus Is the Foundation of a Green Future”
Sustainability Coordinator Prof. Dr. Emine Hesna Kandır noted that one of the primary objectives of the Sustainability Coordination Office is to promote a green campus culture. She emphasized that plastic bottles take approximately 450 years to decompose in nature and warned about the growing global problem of plastic waste, often referred to as the “eighth continent.” Kandır described the initiative as a small but significant step toward achieving long-term environmental sustainability.
The event concluded with the distribution of reusable water bottles to students, reinforcing the faculty’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable campus practices.
